Jack-Up Analysis

Stewart Technology Associates (STA) is a leading engineering consultancy firm which focuses on marine and offshore structures, fluid dynamics and other diverse services and systems.  With a broad range of expertise and a background in research, design and analysis, one of the major focuses for STA has been jack-up analysis.

In the mid-90’s STA designed the Irish Sea Pioneer which still operates in the Celtic Sea.

Jack-up analysis has received a great deal of attention from STA and specifically Mr. W.P. (Bil) Stewart, P.E., President of Stewart Technology Associates who in recent years has consulted on a wide range of projects, co-authored papers and has chaired conference sessions.

Bil Stewart was invited to speak and submit a paper at the City University Conference, London, 2006, on the topic of jack-up analysis. You can view this paper at the following link:
Mat-Supported Jack-Up Foundation on Soft Clay- Overturning Storm Stability
This paper is in regards to the Maleo Producer, a mat-supported jack-up converted to a MOPU (Mobile Offshore Production Platform located in a seismically active offshore region of Indonesia. Stewart Technology Associates undertook a large role in jack-up analysis and design related to the structures stability and resistance to overturning in storms.

Accompanying this paper is a PowerPoint presentation which includes illustrations, detailed computer graphics, tables and data from this project.  You can view this file at the following link:

In addition, Bill Stewart has been active in a variety of conferences, specifically presenting the keynote paper along with co-authoring additional papers at the recent Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) session on MALEO MOPU:  Fast Jack Up Conversion for Seismically Active Soft-Soil Site.

Below you will find a link to several papers on jack-up analysis submitted to the 2008 Offshore Technology Conference held in Houston Texas, USA 5-8 May 2008.  Bil Stewart was selected as the session’s chairperson for the Maleo MOPU program.

STA Participation in the 2008 Offshore Technology Conference

Stewart Technology Associates (STA) is a leading engineering consultancy firm specializing in marine and offshore structures.  While our firm handles a wide range of services and systems, STA is known throughout the industry for expertise focusing on jack-up analysis and design.

Mr. W.P. (Bil) Stewart, P.E., President of Stewart Technology Associates has been extremely active in jack-up analysis, authoring several technical papers and articles, as well as being closely associated with several leading learned societies which include the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

In addition, W.P. Stewart has been active in a variety of conferences specifically presenting the keynote paper along with co-authoring additional papers at the recent Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) session on MALEO MOPU:  Fast Jack Up Conversion for Seismically Active Soft-Soil Site.

Several papers concerning jack-up analysis submitted and selected for presentation co-authored by Stewart Technology Associates at the 2008 Offshore Technology Conference held in Houston Texas, USA, 5-8 May 2008 include:

The Maleo MOPU Project: Overview and Keynote Address
This overview paper describes the conversion, operations and benefits that can be recovered through a MOPU deployment.  The Mobile Offshore Production Unit (MOPU), Maleo Producer is owned and operated by Global Process Systems and currently leased to Santos which operates it offshore Indonesia for gas production.

Seismic Time History Response of the Maleo Producer
This paper summarizes the procedures used to assess the structural adequacy of the Maleo MOPU platform for seismic loading.  The Maleo Platform, located in the Madura Straits, offshore Indonesia is a seismically active region.

Detailed Geotechnical Investigation Around In-Place Mat Foundation Including T-Bar and CPT Comparisons
This paper describes the extensive site characterization undertaken to prove the stability of the Maleo Producer facility during both the design storm and seismic events.

Drillers Benefit From Consulting With STA During A Jack-Up Analysis

[Posted on November 26]

Thriving drilling operations rely on the constant and ongoing analysis of their offshore structures so that they can make adjustments when necessary in order to maximize productivity while maintaining the highest levels of safety. Drillers both large and small need to perform tasks like a Jack-Up analysis so that they’ll be able to identify when there are issues that have to be addressed. The results of that analysis need to be credible so that the approach they take to addressing those issues can be trusted and will yield the expected benefits.

Since 1986 Stewart Technology Associates has been hired by drilling operations all over the world to consult during a jack-up analysis and similar tasks related to their offshore structures. When STA oversees these types of analysis, we ensure they are conducted thoroughly and accurately for the best results. Over the years STA has proven to have the ability use the data that’s collected to help clients make improvements to their operations that are valuable both immediately and in the long term. In addition to these increases, another goal of a jack-up analysis is preventing accidents that can have major consequences.

The experienced STA team is led by CEO and founder Bil Stewart who started the company after years of working in the field. He has a diverse background that has greatly influenced the approach STA has utilized to assist drilling operations of all types. He’s always believed in expanding the horizons and abilities of STA rather than focusing on a niche area of the industry. This has enabled us to work with everyone from some of the world’s largest drilling contractors to government agencies. A great example is the recent mooring analysis contract awarded to STA by the Indian Oil Corporation. We will assess their Single point moorings in Paradip and assist them in expanding the capabilities of those structures by running simulations using the latest OrcaFlex software.

In addition to consulting on tasks like a jack-up analysis, STA provides other services to our clients, such as helping improve their spill containment or oil spill cleanup methods so that they can minimize the damage caused by these accidents. We have proven that establishing and maintaining a relationship with our firm pays off and that’s why so many drillers have relied on our services for several years and even decades in some cases
